History
Reading the letter on this page will give you a very good insight into how James Smellie Ltd was founded in 1893. As the most recent owners of the company we feel humbled when we think of the huge amount of people that have benefited from the craftsmanship of the James Smellie employees over the years.
Our predecessors, John and Chrissy Belli had owned the company since 1991 until we took over in 2006. Previous to that there have been a few owners since the founder James Smellie, seeing the company through two world wars and two major fires.
Over the years, the fireplace industry has changed beyond recognition and like many industries has fallen victim to mass production and foreign imports. However, we have always kept our high standards and are adaptable to change. This has always kept us apart from our competitors and is now giving us a steady growth as a company in an ever changing market.
Throughout its history, high quality workmanship has always been the backbone of James Smellie Ltd and that is how we shall endeavour to keep it.
